Truckee River Fishing Report-8-31-16

Seems like fish have perked up with the cooler weather. Lots of grabs, and the occasional big fish happening on the Truckee River.

Highs are back in the 70’s, ahh, lows in the 30’s. Can’t stand that heat, and it was hot this summer. In fact, if you head out in the morning, bring a winter jacket if you are anywhere below Hirschdale on the Truckee River. In the wind and shade, you will freeze, bring your waders for sure too.

So we’re getting lots of grabs, Mainly off the tight line rig, or the dry dropper rig. The streamer fishing seems to be getting a bit better too. Still lots and lots of crayfish. They have babies, and there’s lots and lots of baby crayfish in the river right now too. Less caddis, so my dropper, or point fly, depending on how you’re rigged is a smallish dark mayfly- nymph.

Flows are still good, but look for flows to drop after Labor Day on the Truckee River. Its ok, we’ve made in through the summer and are fish stock our fine. Should be good fall fishing actually on the T.

The Little Truckee River is still too low. Stay off the LT right now please. Fish cool, and you aren’t being cool fishing out there right now.

Pyramid Lake opens in a month. The opener comes quick. I didn’t get to spend as much time as I wanted out there last year because the wife was way too pregnant with twins. I just couldn’t go that far from home last winter. I’m looking forward to this season on the res. Please come out and join me for some switch rod clinics this fall.

The new Sage X is out and it is bad ass. I have a few, and have been fishing them. They are great rods, a bit better  feeling than the One’s. Still fast, but more “feel” in the rod. Go demo one at a local fly shop and give them a try and see what I’m trying to say.
