Truckee River Fly Fishing Report-12-12-17

Clear and cold.

Slightly warm in the afternoons, but clear and cold on the Truckee River.

Overnight lows have been cold, like teens here in the Hirsch, and not really getting out of the 30’s. Put a little East wind in the mix and it goes right through ya. That being said, fishing ain’t bad for it being mid-December. There is no anchor ice, and access is good everywhere.

Flows are good, dropping a lot from last week, about 800 something here. 1,200 cfs last week.

Winter fishing folks. Water be cold and you have to hit them on the head. Lethargic trouts. You can catch fish, just don’t expect too many.

Now that flows have dropped, Nevada is a better option than the Ca side this time of year. It is much warmer down in the silver state. Years past I did all my guiding in Nevada in winter. The drought hit and f’d things up, but the Nevada side is fishing again. We had some good days down in the conservancy this fall and then flows got way high.

So for now pray for snow. Nymph up on them with eggs, worms, stones, beatis, and midges. Fish some streamers and sometimes the meat will pull them out if their winter funk.

I will be doing a winter clinic first or second week of January.
