Truckee River Flies and Hatches
I have had success with these fly patterns over the years of fishing and guiding on the river. Some of the patterns pictured are of my own creation, some of them borrowed. If you have a few of each of these patterns of flies you will be set for Truckee area trout.
| |
Baetis Emerger Sz#14-18
This type of pattern has been my #1 fly for dry fly fishing. I don’t even bother tying on the adult dun anymore. Use the small sizes for Winter Baetis and the bigger sizes for Spring BWO’s. Deadly on either The Little Truckee or Truckee Rivers.
Baetis Soft Hackle Sz#14-16
This falls somewhere between an Emerger or a Nymph. Either way this is one of my top three producers. Hang one off the back of a dry or Emerger during a hatch or fish it deep on a tandem Nymph rig.
March Brown Emerger Sz#12
We have a great little March Brown hatch up here but it actually comes later than March, more like April and May. Fish this in tandem on The Truckee River in the spring with a BWO Emerger behind it.
Pale Morning Dun Sz#14-16
This fly kills it on the Little Truckee River in the summer beginning in June, just ask Joe Cerniglia.

Green Drake Emerger Sz#10-12
I ripped this pattern off from Scott Sanchez, famous Montana fly tier. It works well in both fast and still water. Great Little Truckee River fly in June. |
Skwalla Dry Sz#8-10
For years we have missed the Skwalla hatch up here. Being that the Truckee River is now open all year, we don’t have to drive down to the Lower Yuba anymore. Usually in the middle of March we start seeing them flying around. |
Golden Stone Sz#6-8
You better be ready when the Goldens come out on the Truckee River usually in late June. Hang a little Yellow Stone dry off the back in the evenings near the willows. |
Hopper Sz#8-12
Last Year on The Truckee River we had a ton of hoppers. It’s best to fish them late August into Fall. Also a great fly to fish on the Little Truckee River instead of using an indicator. |

October Caddis Sz#6-10
Come October on the Truckee River you will start to see the big tangerine caddis flying around dropping their eggs on the river in the evening. A great searching fly for the fall. Hang a dropper off it while flipping it up near the banks. |
Carpenter Ant Sz#10
We get big winged Carpenter ants up here when it warms up in May. Trout love to come up and eat these guys. A great local lake fly in late Spring.
Caddis Dry Sz#10-16
You better have some Caddis for those summer time evenings on the Truckee. I usually fish this in green, olive, or tan. When you see the slashy type rises, trout are eating the pupae right under the surface. Tie on a Green Caddis Pupae about 10 inches behind this guy.
Little Yellow Stone Dry Sz#12-14
One of the most dependable hatches on the Truckee River in the summer is the Little Yellow Stone. Toss one up under the willows and wait for a head to come up. A great searching fly if you would rather spend your day fishing dries.

Caddis Pupae, Green Sz#10-16
Don’t even bother coming up and fishing the Truckee River in the summer without Caddis Pupae. The Birds Nest was tied by Cal Bird from Verdi NV to imitate the insane caddis biomass of the Truckee River. It is now world famous. This is my #1 fly all summer in either green or tan, even gold and orange work well.
Pale Morning Dun Nymph Sz#14-16
Just a hopped up P.T., but I think this one works a little better. Tied with a glass bead, it sometimes out fishes a gold one.
Rubber Leg Stone Sz#4-6
This fly makes trout go nuts. You can tie this in any crazy color you want. A Rubber Leg Stone isn’t just a steelhead fly anymore. Put a Micro May on behind this and hold on.
October Caddis Pupae Sz#8-10
I like to fish this fly late September when the big fall Caddis begin moving around on the Truckee River. Great fly on the swing as well.

Zebra Midge Sz#16-20
Deadly on either the Little Truckee or Truckee Rivers all year long. I mostly fish this fly in the winter. Blue is also a great color.
Baetis Nymph Sz#16-20
Our Baetis are very dark colored up here. I usually tie this in black with a shiny wing case. This fly in a size 18 has taken more big trout for me than any other fly.
Green Drake Nymph Sz#10
I have caught a lot of nice fish on the Truckee River with this fly. The cone head allows the fly to sink in the early high summer flows when these guys start moving around. |
March Brown Nymph Sz#12-14
Deadly in the spring on the Truckee River. Not that a P.T. wouldn’t work just as well. I just like the pronounced segmented abdomen. |

Golden Stone Nymph Sz#6
Golden Stones are on the menu year round for Trout. Fish this in deeper riffles and over the drop offs into pools. |
Sculpin Sz#4
I tie all my streamers unweighted and fish them on a switch rod with a sink tip. Larry calls me Kelly Gilloup, and boy is he right. Unweighted streamers are easy to cast on a sink tip line and are presented at the same level as the fish. Truckee River trout love steamers. |
Crayfish Sz#6-8
My buddy Chris from Bozeman got me into this fly. Chris fishes something like this on the Madison River in Montana in late summer. This Fly also works great on the Truckee River either dead drifted or stripped in on a sink tip line. |
