Fly Fishing the Truckee River

From its origin at Lake Tahoe, through the 86 mile long journey into historic Pyramid Lake in Nevada, the Truckee River is one of the West’s best wild trout waters. With miles of trout choked water, concentration is placed on fishing the wild trout water from just below the town of Truckee to the state line of Nevada. The Truckee River is a classic big water “freestone” trout stream with long runs, pools, and, pocket water. You’ll find deep canyons where sometimes you might not see another angler all day.

The Truckee River’s self sustaining population of wild rainbow and brown trout do not fool easily. Proper technique and presentation are a must. There are some that say the Truckee River is the hardest river they have ever fished. I have developed some techniques to land these tough trout. From tiny Midge and Baetis fishing in the winter months, to dry fly and monster streamer-eating browns in the summer months, I will show you how to catch Truckee River Trout.

Fly Fishing the Little Truckee River

This tail water fishery between Stampede Reservoir and Boca Reservoir offers fly anglers a spring creek setting with strong hatches throughout the summer months. If dry fly fishing is for you, this is the place. From Green Drakes in June, to Pale Morning Duns in July, to awesome Baetis hatches in the Fall. You can always see rising fish on the Little Truckee River.

Since 1999, the “L.T.” has become one of California’s premier blue ribbon fisheries with most fish averaging between the length of 14”- 22” inches. Fish in the Little Truckee River see a lot of flies throughout the season. Long leaders and light tippet are a must. Proper fly selection is crucial. Tie on a pink hackle stacker and hold on.
